What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word grit?
Do you think of determination and tenacity? Or does what we use in the colder months on the roads spring to mind? Luckily, both of these definitions embody what the Gritting Company is all about.
- spread grit and often salt on (an icy surface)
- courage and resolve; strength of character. synonyms: determination, tenacity, perseverance
Definition 1: Spread grit and often salt on (an icy surface)
Although most people know why grit is used for winter maintenance purposes, what actually is it? What’s the science behind gritting? Does gritting actually work?
Although it’s called gritting, it’s actually BS3247 standard rock salt that our winter maintenance fleet is spreading all over the country. When spread at the right time, the rock salt stops ice and snow from forming effectively. The salt dissolves into the liquid and lowers its freezing point, preventing the ice from forming.
For it to work effectively, our gritting teams throughout the country will endeavour to put the grit down at exactly the right time! With regular weather updates, the Gritting Company is out and about when and where you need them.
Definition 2: courage and resolve; strength of character synonyms: determinations, tenacity and perseverance
When we think of our winter maintenance staff, the company and our work ethic, nothing describes us better than this. We show determination, tenacity and perseverance every night we go out gritting throughout the UK.
The Gritting Company are out seven days a week, during the hours of darkness, in the coldest conditions, to ensure the minimum of disruption to your day-to-day business.
Our Head Office team in Leeds are on hand 24 hours a day, right throughout the season- we even skip Christmas if needed, meaning you’ll never be left out in the cold.
If that’s not showing grit, then I don’t know what is!
Our winter maintenance vehicles are strategically located at over 73 depots throughout the UK, giving true full national courage. They carry around 10 tonnes of salt each, enough to cover their full route and giving the ability to spread extra salt in adverse weather. No one else has 20,000 tonnes of salt across 73 depots!
